CHOCOLATE CITY CLEVELAND

We conceptualized and developed, with Third Space Action Lab (TSAL) their Chocolate City Cleveland (CCC) Map, a web-based app that takes visitors on a historical tour of Cleveland’s 105th Corridor. Employing a unique combination of geospatial software and afro-futuristic design, the CCC map highlights a number of significant locations along 105th and the Black people who created these transformative spaces that catalyzed the creation of vibrant Black neighborhoods in Cleveland. The app also includes a timeline that notes key political, social, and legislative activity impacting Cleveland during this historic period in American history.

In addition to the app, JEME designed + developed the initiative’s brand identity, conceptualized and designed the print and merchandise collateral to promote the project and launch event, and developed key messaging, hashtags, and social media collateral. The app launched in celebration of Juneteenth 2023, with a special Launch & Juneteenth Celebration at two of the stops along the map route, Corey United Methodist Church and the Madison Building.
Stops along the route will be added along with an overarching narrative of Chocolate Cities around the country. The 2nd phase of physical markers along the route are being concepted currently. This project is intended to establish an archive to preserve our collective memory and be inspired to imagine a brighter future for Cleveland’s Black neighborhoods. Black History is American History.
